The Story Behind The Legacy

IMG_9177.jpg

The Legacy started 3 generations ago when the late Mary Burke of Gainesville, FL began baking in her home to be a blessing to her friends, family and local community. Baking just out off the the joy of her heart, Mrs. Burke had a separate stove installed just so she could keep up with the request for her special cakes. She is most famously known for her signature Red Velvet and Carrot Cakes.

After the passing of Mother Burke, her son the late Mr. Willie Gent Sr., the second oldest of 6 children, continued the Legacy of cooking and baking. Mr. Gent later opened his first restaurant in the Gainesville area called "PNM" to support the emerging black community with his entrepreneurial pursuits and joy of cooking.

It was at this time that Mr. Gent decided to introduce his mother's recipes to honor her memory and to continue the legacy. After several attempts, Mr. Willie mastered his mother's original recipes which gained him instant popularity and praise by his family and patrons.

His most prized and sacred cake was his mother's Carrot Cake. He held it near and dear to his heart and refused to share it with anyone.  Therefore, the Carrot Cake was the only cake recipe that was passed down posthumously.

My name is Destini Jackson and I'm a self-taught/ family-taught baker servicing the Tampa Bay area. I specialize in made-from-scratch cakes, cheesecakes and cookies. Some of which are family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Originally from Gainesville, FL, I began as a hobby baker, mainly baking during the holiday season. I've had a love for baking since I was a child. The holiday season was my favorite time of the year. There would be so many cake requests to complete and I was at the center of it all, watching, assisting and eventually baking cakes on my own for family and friends.

Legacy Sweets was established shortly after the passing of my parents, Willie and Jacqueline Gent to honor their memory. It is indeed an honor and I take so much pride in being able to continue my family's legacy of baking.
